Sonder Explorations The Last Rainforest

The Last Rainforest

Courtney Lauber March 24, 2017

From time to time I get a little nostalgic and this isn't really a secret. In the past, I have been known to ramble on about things from my childhood or just a few months past that seemed like a lifetime ago. However, there has been something on my brain lately that I can't quite let go of.

FernGully.

This movie changed my life when I was younger. Not only was I fascinated by the fairies and terrified by the black smog, but it really changed and enhanced the way I felt about the environment. I watched this movie so many times and let my imagination carry over into reality. I spent a lot of time outside wandering about, but this movie was another cog to the machine that drove my love for my surroundings and the world at large.

So before I keep droning on about sweet times of my youth I want to take a moment to apply this to real life. Think about the environment today and the state that we're in. This movie can really shed a light on what we deal with today. Destruction, absentmindedness, and lack of care never turns out well when humans interact with mother nature.

I invite you to watch it and let me know what you think. I'd be interested to see if anyone else remembers this movie or is inspired yet again today through watching it.

Enjoy - click the image to go check it out if you'd like.

Skate Girls

Courtney Lauber March 23, 2017

Style is something that is constantly evolving and it's one of my favorite aspects of fashion. Sure, there are trends that circle and come back around, but the ability to change your style and your fashion at the drop of a hat is pretty cool. Urban Outfitters has been putting out content lately regarding their Spring Collection 2017. It surrounds this skate vibe - specifically inspired by skate girls.

Growing up with a brother and a desire to be more like him I was always wearing hand-me-downs and brands that were geared more towards male identifying individuals. I still like wearing those clothes and am typically much more comfortable in them. That's why I think this new series from UO is so cool. It's skate street style made just a little more mainstream, but the ads don't seem all girly with pink and sparkly barbies - you know?

Here's Urban Outfitters Trailer for their new collection as well as some items below that you can either purchase or laugh at I'm not sure...maybe both.

Sonder Explorations - Artists Don't

Why Artists Don't Support Artists

Courtney Lauber March 23, 2017

Unfortunately, the human species has been known to cut others down for their own personal gains. It's an interesting thing to watch, but an even more interesting thing to be part of. In saying this, I don't mean it's fun to deal with someone who's trying to cut you down, I simply mean that going through something like that will teach you a lot about yourself and the other individual. However, the area where it affects me most in my life is the art world.

Artists who don't support other artists are, quite frankly, jealous and afraid. If you're not willing to be open or to help anyone out it's obvious that you might have some personal issues. Watching as a third party member, artists who don't teach or help other artists seem to have this idea that if they help someone else that the other person might "steal" whatever it is that they find so individualistic about their work. In my experience and from discussions with colleges and co-workers alike - there's a trend amongst these kinds of people.

I have no doubt that I will discuss this a number of times (and have touched on it in the past), but if you have experiences that are similar or just have concerns I invite you to talk about it below. I am not free from blame of this either. Looking to my past there are times where I didn't feel ok with sharing or felt alright with helping another because it seemed to make me uneasy. Whether it was their personality or I was judging their intentions with my work, I was very cautious. I was so cautious that at times I came off as rude.

Don't get me wrong - I may never share all of my secrets (or remember them for that matter), but simply shutting people out of a situation or cutting them down for no reason at all is not something you will see me intentionally do.

What's so wrong with having more artists in the world anyway? It's all about perspective.
